RTP Mundo highlights innovations developed in Portugal based on natural resin

Press

The RTP Mundo programme «Isto Faz-se por Cá» showcased new applications for rosin, a component of pine resin, and its derivatives, which are being explored for use in the packaging, textile, footwear, and automotive industries.

Biodegradable packaging and functional coatings that extend the shelf life of packaged foods (e.g., meat), fibres and knitted structures with improved properties and enhanced resistance, shoe soles with improved durability, and more sustainable and high-performance automotive interior components are examples of innovation made in Portugal.

These solutions, which benefit from CeNTI's expertise, were developed as part of RN21, an Integrated Project whose main mission is to revitalise Portugal's natural resin value chain and accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable bioeconomy.

Replacing the direct use of additives and raw materials of fossil origin, while valuing natural resources without compromising the technical performance of industrial applications, is the main objective.

These products and technologies were developed in close collaboration with industry and other entities of the scientific and technological ecosystem..
