BIOMAT: promoting the circular economy with bio-based nanomaterials
Based on a strategic vision for the future, the primary goal of the BIOMAT Project was to establish an Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB) to provide services to a wide range of industries and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in order to boost innovation in bio-based polyurethane (PUR) materials containing nanomaterials.
This purpose resulted in a portfolio of crucial services focused on the production and testing of functional PUR foams with bio-based nanoparticles, specifically for the construction, automotive, furniture, and upholstery sectors.
Led by CeNTI and drawing on the expertise of 25 entities from seven countries, BIOMAT thus filled the gap in the value chain of these industrial sectors, providing new services and supporting, at various levels, the adoption and use of these materials in these key industries.
The innovation factor
Within the scope of research, BIOMAT has developed a set of new technologies targeting the bio-based polyurethane (PUR) foams and composites sector, featuring improved properties such as fire resistance, acoustic insulation, and waterproofing.
Additionally, the Project demonstrated the applicability and the potential value of these advanced bio-based technologies in target markets, such as construction (structural and building insulation), the automotive sector (vehicle interiors) and furniture and upholstery (mattresses and sofas).
This work will continue through the BIOMAT-TB platform, which provides a range of technologies, specialised business support services and high-performance bio-based solutions.
