SusSens

Towards environmentally friendly sensing solutions for smart packaging applications

The SusSens project proposes the development of a new generation of environmentally sustainable printable optical and sensing materials for smart packaging applications. These solutions will enable the detection of parameters that may affect product quality during storage and transport, namely temperature, humidity, pressure, deformation, and the presence of gases.

The project also includes the development of luminescent anti-counterfeiting systems to be integrated into packaging, contributing to product authentication and traceability.

Main Goals/Activities

  • Develop innovative sensors that address the needs identified in the scientific state of the art.

  • Create advanced and integrable technological solutions that meet the requirements of the packaging industry.

  • Develop a new generation of sensors based on a nanoparticle-free approach.

  • Promote more sustainable materials and processes, aligned with the sector’s environmental requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of fully recyclable sensors, reducing dependence on disposable electronics.

  • Minimise the production of electronic waste (e-waste) in the context of the Internet of Things and digitalisation.

  • Enable the integration of sensors into conventional packaging, without the need for complex structural modifications.

  • Monitor the integrity, quality and authenticity of packaging, reinforcing product safety and reliability.
