Sensor-driven solution for accurate food volume monitoring

The SmartTech project aims to develop a smart packaging solution capable of measuring the volume of food inside, contributing significantly to the reduction of household food waste and unnecessary purchases.

By integrating sensors and connectivity systems, this innovative packaging will enable users to monitor, at any time and from anywhere, the quantity of food available in their pantries. In addition, consumers will receive timely notifications regarding product shelf life via a user-friendly mobile application, which will also include extra features for stock and shopping management.

The project encompasses the entire value chain of the food packaging sector, from raw materials to end consumer, aligning with market trends and addressing the challenges of embedding technology into packaging.

The main areas of activity within SmartTech include:

  • Injection moulding, for the production of plastic packaging with integrated electronics;
  • Electronics integration, particularly printed sensing using In-Mould Labelling (IML) process;
  • Packaging management via mobile application, including real-time inventory monitoring and management.

Main Goals/Activities

  • Develop innovative sensors (printed and conventional) for integration into the packaging, with the capability to quantify food volume;
  • Design a specialised mould tailored for the injection of electronic components, ensuring full compatibility with the functional requirements of the smart packaging;
  • Produce smart packaging with communication capabilities, equipped with a printed level sensor integrated via IML or a conventional sensor incorporated into the lid, enabling volume measurement through two alternative approaches;
  • Create a user-friendly mobile application for the efficient control and management of the smart packaging.
