Smart & Eco-efficient Flexible Films

The plastics industry, particularly the flexible films and packaging sector, faces growing challenges related to environmental impact, low recyclability and the need for materials with improved properties and functionalities, as well as enhanced traceability and control throughout supply chains.

The SMART-PACK project, led by Polivouga and composed of five companies and six research organisations (ENESII), aims to address some of these challenges through the development of biodegradable and high-performance materials for different applications, the exploration of new recycling methods, and the creation of active and intelligent solutions for the films and packaging industry.

To achieve these objectives, the project is structured into four subprojects (SP): Agricultural Plastic Films, Food Films and Packaging, Smart Flexible Films, and Recyclability and Eco-design. These subprojects are built around three main strategic pillars: new high-performance materials, incorporation of active and intelligent functionalities, and promotion of sustainability throughout the materials’ life cycle.

SMART-PACK

Main Goals/Activities

SP1. Agricultural Plastic Films: Develop compostable films with enhanced chemical and mechanical resistance, integrating new additives, nutrients and functional materials, such as pest repellents and alternatives to aluminium.

SP2. Food Films and Packaging: Develop high-barrier, low-haze films (BOPP), antimicrobial films (LDPE), and biodegradable solutions based on cellulose and lignin, with mechanical properties equivalent to current solutions.

SP3. Smart Flexible Films: Develop colourimetric and microfluidic sensors, as well as bimetallic systems. Integrate nanoparticles for traceability. Print temperature and humidity sensors. Develop batteries for smart labels.

SP4. Recyclability and Eco-design: Develop pre-treatment, decontamination and ink-removal technologies. Create advanced recycling solvents and processes (including pyrolysis and direct incorporation of flakes). Carry out life cycle assessment and eco-design of the developed solutions.
