Sustainable Innovation in Coffee Capsule Collection and Valorisation

The ReCAPture project aims to develop new functionalised biocomposites from coffee grounds, as well as smart solutions for the collection and valorisation of coffee capsules.

The project includes the integration of smart systems into collection bags and containers, the development of an automated capsule sorting system, and a management and gamification platform to support the different stakeholders involved.

To raise awareness and promote public participation, the project will be implemented in pilot schools, engaging the school community in the adoption of more sustainable practices for the collection and valorisation of coffee capsules.

Main Goals/Activities

  • Valorise coffee grounds for the functionalisation of collection containers and bags.

  • Develop a PHA-based biodegradable bag incorporating coffee grounds from capsule collection as a functional additive.

  • Develop and integrate, through injection moulding process (IML/IME) during container production, printed level sensors, printed tags and accelerometers for monitoring the collection containers. Also integrate printed temperature and humidity sensors in the lid area.
  • Develop a collaborative platform to support collaboration among the different stakeholders across the value chain, from production and consumption to collection, recycling and reuse.

  • Implement an automated capsule sorting system, combining different computer vision, Artificial Intelligence, robotics and automation approaches for the identification and separation of capsules and materials, as well as process control.

  • Promote public awareness and participation through the implementation of the project in pilot schools and the use of gamification solutions.
