PorCoating

Development of functional and decorative coatings for porcelain

The PorCoating project aims to develop functional/decorative coatings for porcelain tableware, incorporating thermochromic materials, resistance to metal marking, and mechanical resistance, among others. The focus is to enhance the technological value of the products by simultaneously integrating innovative functionalities that are currently unavailable on the market.

To achieve these goals, techniques such as Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) and Digital Printing (DP) will be applied, alongside design optimisation and ceramic paste modification, ensuring the technological integration of functionality and decoration.

The goal of this project is to deliver solutions with high application potential within the food sector, incorporating value-added decorative functionalities, such as hygiene, sensing/prevention, comfort, sustainability, and process optimisation.

Main Goals/Activities

  • Develop materials and methods to enhance the mechanical resistance of porcelain, focusing on flexural, tensile, and edge impact resistance;
  • Develop coatings with resistance to metal marking and good adhesion to porcelain surfaces;
  • Develop thermochromic materials for integration as a functional and decorative element in food-contact parts of porcelain tableware;
  • Develop porcelain items with integrated multiple functionalities;
  • Develop PVD coatings for three-dimensional porcelain substrates;
  • Develop paints with thermochromic materials compatible with digital printing system for porcelain.
