INTEGRANO

Multidimensional integrated quantitative approach to assess safety and sustainability of nanomaterials in real case life cycle scenarios

The European project INTEGRANO aims to develop an integrated, evidence-based approach for the design of safe and sustainable Nanomaterials (NMs) and Nano-enabled Products (NEPs), aligned with Safe and Sustainable by Design SSbD guidelines. The proposal addresses the four stages of the NM lifecycle - synthesis, incorporation, use, and end-of-life, and considers five key dimensions: safety, environmental, economic, social, and functional.

To achieve this, the project employs standardized evaluation methodologies, including impact categories specific to nanotoxicity and eco-nanotoxicity, as well as a Multi-Objective Optimization Design (MOOD) algorithm to identify solutions that meet multiple performance indicators. A digital platform will support scientists, engineers, and policymakers in decision-making, reducing development time and costs, promoting transparency, and facilitating the sustainable industrial adoption of nanotechnologies.

Additionally, INTEGRANO will be compatible with other SSbD frameworks, enabling data exchange and the integration of results into different assessment metrics.

INTEGRANO

Main Goals/Activities

  • Develop innovative approaches for the safe and sustainable design of Nanomaterials (NMs) aligned with SSbD guidelines.
  • Create standardized methodologies to assess nanotoxicity and eco-nanotoxicity across the NM lifecycle.
  • Apply a multi-objective optimization design (MOOD) algorithm to identify solutions meeting multiple key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Implement a digital platform to support decision-making and foster sustainable adoption of nanotechnologies.
  • Facilitate integration with existing SSbD frameworks while reducing R&D costs and timelines.
