IFishing

Functional and smart fishing gear

The iFishing project aims to develop functional and intelligent fishing gear for octopus fishing. In this context, it integrates modular solutions, including easy-to-assemble and repair connecting elements and structural profiles based on bio-based polymeric solutions, which, individually or in combination, enable the development of new intelligent artefacts for fishing activities.

By combining technological innovation with the principles of circular bioeconomy and sustainable fisheries, iFishing contributes to the ecological transition of the fisheries sector, in line with the objectives of the National Strategy for the Sea and the European Green Deal. The project also promotes the reduction of environmental impacts through the minimisation of the ecological footprint of fishing gear, supports the digitalisation of the blue economy through the implementation of real-time data collection and analysis systems, and contributes to climate adaptation by fostering more sustainable and resilient practices within marine ecosystems.

Main Goals/Activities

  • Develop new bioformulations, namely bio-based thermoplastic polymer formulations, with a view to enhancing their biodegradability.

  • Develop concepts and components, as well as the corresponding manufacturing processes, to enable modular solutions aimed at optimising assembly and maintenance processes.
  • Develop sensing and traceability systems to allow the localisation of fishing gear and the identification of the presence of living organisms within it.

  • Develop processes for the integration of materials and components, aiming to improve production processes and the integration of technologies into functional and intelligent fishing gear.
