Digitalisation and Innovation in the European Food Industry
The DIEFI project aims to advance the digitalisation of food production processes in line with Industry 4.0 principles, commonly referred to as Food 4.0. The concept is being demonstrated in a real industrial setting at Meysu, a company specialised in bottling beverages such as juices and soft drinks, where the process is complex, highly engineered, and demands advanced industrial automation.
A key element of the project is the real-time monitoring of quality parameters through the development of a hybrid, plug-and-play system that can be seamlessly and effectively integrated and connected to the production line, enabling continuous assessment of product quality.
Therefore, the project’s main objective is to establish the physical and digital infrastructure required to collect, process, and transmit valuable production data to an IoT platform, where the information can be analysed and acted upon accordingly. To achieve this, the project focuses on three core areas of development:
- Low-cost, plug-and-play, self-configuring sensing system, compatible with multiple types of sensors and adaptable to a range of industrial environments, without requiring complex reconfiguration;
- Smart Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) platform, with standards-based data integration, automatic generation of complete traceability records, and support for real-time monitoring and action;
- Cybersecurity module for PLM systems, featuring secure access control and ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.
